Each week through April, I will let you in on the secrets of our savviest clients by sharing the design trends we’ve been seeing for birth announcements in 2010.  Just one at a time, now!  I can’t give up all my secrets in just one post!

1.  Birth Announcement Trend -  Use only 1 (large) photo instead of multiple photo layouts

Although 3-photo formats  are still hugely popular -  especially with sibling birth announcements – I’m  definitely seeing a resurgence of a simple, 1 photo format.  The new twist on this classic birth announcement format?  Clients today want one large photo that goes from edge to edge of their announcement.  We in the industry call that “full bleed”.  A photo that is full bleed is elegant and refined, but, simply put, a bigger photo means….more room to show off that beautiful new baby!

Another plus with this birth announcement trend is that it takes the pressure off of the new (sleep deprived, in a fog, fueled by coffee and only coffee) parents to choose 3, 4 or even sometimes more perfect photos.  I recently designed a custom birth announcement for a mother who was adamant on having a 4 photo design.  Wouldn’t you know, it took her months, yes months! to get the perfect photos.  She agonized over it endlessly, and rightfully so – it’s an important keepsake and she wanted to perfectly capture her new daughter on film.
